hey, i dunno who still reads this shit but sorry i havent updated in a while, it turned out i had ball cancer after all

seriously though if i cant mediafire you dudes some records from a hospital bed i just dont have any business at the forefrontof the blogosphere do i?

anyway they have me on some sweet ass painkillers

this is a tape i recorded with my 2 main dudes, arthur and preston, over summer
http://www.mediafire.com/?3jndqzibmjc
http://www.mediafire.com/?fmh30yhjjhm

preston records as presstones, you can peep his shit here http://www.myspace.com/gorseloops

arthur has a myspace with some ok stuff on it but hes done a lot better shit in the last few months, heres my favorite thing hes sent me and his space www.myspace.com/thearthur4

oh heres my stuff www.myspace.com/fiftythousandbees

i mean preston is definitely steering a lot of the tape, since he was mostly the one in charge of the loops, he's the one doing the weird little guitar figures, arthur is doing the more riffy stuff and i think he played some keyboard, i'm doing oscillator and samples

side 1 is pretty good, side 2 is easily the best recording ive ever been a part of

oh also, stolen link but heres the soundtrack to limits of control, the new jarmusch movie
http://www.mediafire.com/?jodzngzyyjm

i feel like if i hadnt been on tons of painkillers i woulda found it super boring but i absolutely loved it

chris doyle shot it, he's the dude who shot all the wong kar wai movies, all my friends are super gay for him
/
its basically an ambient movie, theres enough snappy dialogue to keep it moving, but its all basially within a vacuum, everyone just riffs about one topic, patterns repeat, and we get a bunch of absolutely beautiful desert shots

also the soundtrack is fucking perfect, sunn, earth, boris, black angels, jarmusch's band Bad Rabbit, totally fits

i love the desert, and i love droney rock anf i love this movie

last couple weeks

this is the best thing ive heard in a really really long time, finally bit the bullet and picked it up on vinyl this week

yknow when you read reviews, especially aquarius reviews, and super fuckin especially for psych and noise stuff, and they make it sound totally incredible and compare it to a bunch of stuff you love and then it you finally hear it and its just another decent like, burnt hills record you listen to once

moon duo sounds exactly like the way people talk about wooden shjips

i mean its the main wooden shjips guys side project, but its basically shjips minus everything about them that i dont like

nothing but fuzzed out organ, guitar, feedback, minimal drum machine, and some echoey distorted vox, it sounds like these guys listen to nothing but cale era vu bootlegs and the first 2 mary chain records and suicide . so far they've only got an ep and a 12", so i dont know whats really gonna come next, but i'm really fucking excited. theyre playing at the hemlock november 20. i emailed them and they said they'd rather I didnt post the ep, so here's my 2 favorite songs of theirs

LIGHTS OUT

one day back when i worked at amoeba this older guy came to my register in an angry samoans shirt. i mumbled "nice shirt" or something, which lead to almost 10 minutes of almost totally incomprehensible rantingfrom the guy, who turned out to be "metal" mike saunders (he insists he invented the term heavy metal), lead singer of the angry samoans. he mostly talked about heyward and ozzy and a few samoans shows.

about 3 weeks later, on valentines day, my manager asked me if i'd talked to any customers about the urinals recently. when i said yes i was handed this

inside was a photocopied zine about black sabbath with some comments from mike scrawled in the margins, and an angry samoans shirt

oh, and an envelope adressed to him with this on it

that is entrapment, mike

it is pretty punk rock to be from china

some stuff i've been into lately

D!O!D!O!D! - ghost temple

totally insane 2-man noisy free punk from china

i dont know what else you'd call this, its 2 dudes who have that cool hive mind kinda thing with each other that good jazz guys get with each other freaking the fuck out for 35 minutes

i dont know enough about freejazz to really compare it to anything specific but this is really violent stuff, kind of on a parallel with some of the more thrashy sun city girls jamming except that these guys never get back to the song part because there isnt one. punk as fucc

ALSO:beautiful and haunting psych blues from finland
Ignatz - II

i basically can't take 99% of white dudes approximating the blues or even a lotta actual blues half the time but this is so far removed from what basically anyone except jandek are doing with it (and the music is way more interesting here) that it turned into one of my favorite guitar records. it has a lot of that same disorted primitive appalachian riffing ex-cocaine are tapping into, with fingerpicking and some background effect swashes and weirdo folk-y vocals. sparse crackly production definitely sets a mood, its like he's playing in front of his fireplace inside a glacier. if matt valentine was a really lonely guy this is what his music would sound like

indoor summer

another thing i've been digging this this comp, which is all the rad 50s stuff (spread across 4 volumes, i only have v.1 right now) that the cramps borrowed from/covered

its got fatback by link wray which is worth getting the whole thing for, lotsa gems

honestly though ive just been blasting master of reality on vinyl with my vaporizer, if i could somehow just mediafire that experience for you guys i would

so fucking cali it hurts

early 80s surfy punk, totally goofy and the lyrics lay it on pretty thick but you knew that going in

i'm not gonna wikipedia it but it would literally be shocking if this band wasnt from orange county. i would be shocked.

i saw these guys open for dick dale at a free show at the santa monica pier, it was pretty depressing all around (obviously)

dale kept yelling at his son who clearly didnt like being on stage to solo, which was funny

oh also they do a really good cover of pipeline

the mantles - trust 7"

woozy psych pop jams from some local dudes

havent been able to find a physical copy of the 7' yet but theyre playing july 2 at the hemlock so hopefully i makw it out to that

1st track is kinda crystal stilts-y but it doesnt sound like theyre trying as hard, the whole thing is real relaxed, neato organs and chimey guitars, sorta croony vocals, hitting the same sort of sweet spot as the fee fi fo fums, but more fleshed out. somewhere between them and crystal stilts.

2nd track is the real find though, fuzzed out everything, stoned out vocals, slower and tighter bass+drums, total vespa jam

i found my old highschool computer

aaron dilloway - since he's been gone

i didnt get a chance to grab a lot of shit off it, but i'm really glad i got this cause i totally forgot about it

ghosts of victrola favorites and lost oddities from the female pop vocals dollar bin fly around the room until they disintegrate in front of you basically

dilloway was a wolf eyes dude for a while so obviously you're gonna get some well placed mostquito screams and speaker farts, but this is occupying a much calmer but not really mellower space than a lot of wolf eyes stuff i've heard.

side a is mostly made up of lots of short, sometimes totally coherent, sometimes fairly doctored vocal samples, with instrumental snippets sometimes layering on top of each other, usually just going on to the next thing. not like a "piece", i dont think, but its at an album, and that is pretty cool , some moments of real beauty on this one

alternately spooky, hopeful, and driving

listen to it while driving down a highway in the desert while the sun is going down, or at a dinner party that is going to turn into a seance later

side b sounds like wolf eyes yknow
high frequencies, menacing vocals, squeals, crunches, death marches, pulses, slaps, loops, alien animals, whispers, some very black dicey ocean bleeps and bloops, listen to it while you're getting eaten by ghosts

this whole tape is about ghosts i think

this is pretty cool. i bought this record in the dollar bins like 5 years ago and never really listened to it

its somewhere in between joy division/bauhaus bummer jams, the velvets/doors worship the dream syndicate were doing in america and that sorta jammy 80s psych stuff the brian jonestown massacre ripped off from spacemen 3 who stole it from the cramps and the good stones albums

basically what im trying to say is these guys made fun doomy postpunk-y 80s psych stuff with quivery dramatic vocals on it and it was pretty good

later they made some more expensive records and had some hits in england where everyone was wearing trenchcoats and shit

i just noticed the version i put up here has a different tracklist than the lp which makes the whole thing feel really slow and boring, i'll reshuffle it later

onra - chinoiseries

this is just too fuckin good

usually what I'll do is download 20 or so records at once and then spend the next week or 2 going through them

usually that means that i forget to listen to a few of them and then they pop up on shuffle a few months later

this was one of the best instances of that ever because to me this record came out of fucking nowhere and now i just stay up listening to this on my roof (weather got nice) all night

i played this for my friend will and he said it sounded like sublime frequencies dilla, which is pretty on-point

onra is some french dj guy who went to visit vietnam and came back with a crate of about 30 records, and basically made a j dilla record with them

i dont want it to sound like he's biting dilla or whatever, that's just the best comparison I can come up with. when i first heard this knowing nothing about it i assumed that it was some vietnamese guy in a hut who found some decks somehow and was all disseminating cultural revolution via beats, but even if its not this is still just a motherfucker of a record

the whole thing is made up of vintage chinese and vietnamese pop, and the whole thing hangs together so perfectly that it doesnt seem like a gimmick as much as a perfectly fleshed out aesthetic, even down to the track titles (eat dog, apocalypse now). every single track here is totally refreshing and mysterious and sexy and sounds like driving a fucking old motorcycle through vietnam buying records

what could be cooler than that
